First stage of the Tour is Volterra, about 30km from San Gimignano. Volterra is famous for the extraction and processing of alabaster, the first news of this city, of Etruscan origin, dating to the Iron Age (IX-VII a.C). The main monumental are, Piazza dei Priori, where you can find the medieval Cathedral (XII), in Romanesque style and the Palazzo dei Priori. About the Etruscan period are still preserved: the “Porta all’ Arco, the “Porta Diana” and much of the city walls. Other important monuments are: the Baptistery of San Giovanni, Romanesque, octagonal and the Rocca-Fortezza, which stands at the end of the old town and the Roman theatre.  Driving in direction of Saline and from there continue to Pomarance, which stands on the metalliferous hills, dominating the Val di Cecina. Among the most important monument are: the Parish of St. John the Baptist, the House of Paolo Mascagni, the Clock Tower, the Praetorian Palace. Next stop Larderello, in Pomarance, metalliferous hills, it produces 10% of' geothermal energy worldwide, it is famous for its fumaroles, already known to Dante Alighieri's Inferno. In 1900, starting to use the energy of the fumaroles for the production of electricity. Continue to Massa Marittima, the old town is rich in historical sights and situated high above the new town. It is of Etruscan origin, it became important in medieval times. The main buildings are: the Cathedral, in the Romanesque, the Praetorian Palace and the Palazzo Comunale. In Romanesque-Gothic are the Church of San Agostino and the Church of San Francesco. The city's history is linked with the extraction and processing of metals. Go back towards the Colle di Val d'Elsa, stopping to the Abbey of San Galgano. It is Gothic-Cistercian, shape like a Latin cross with three naves and face with brick and travertine. It is famous because is without floor and roof. Next the Abbey there is Eremo di Montesiepi, where the Sword in the Stone, which legend says is belonged to King Arthur.
